Humphrey Bogart as Dixon Steele and Gloria Grahame as Laurel Gray in Nicholas Ray’s 1950 film noir classic In a Lonely Place. One of the finest films ever made about Hollywood and possibly career best performances from both Bogart and Grahame. A little unusually for its time the affair between Steele and Laurel is complex, mature and ultimately tragic, summed up in the film’s famous lines: “I was born when I met you. I lived while I loved you. I died when you left me.”

We’re big Studio Ghiibli fans and especially the films of the great Hayao Miyazaki. So it was inevitable and essential that we track down an original 1988 Japanese B2 poster for My Neighbour Totoro. It’s a great image because it’s just before (in our humble opinion) the best scene in the film - the arrival of the wonderful Cat Bus!
So it’s framed and on display in our Twickenham gallery/shop now..

On Friday 21 Feb we hosted a Q&A event with the wonderful Madeline Smith. It was a joint venture to support the sale of a vintage 1973 US one-sheet for the James Bond 007 classic Live and Let Die to raise funds for The Princess Alice Hospice. We had already linen-backed, restored and framed the poster we won at a recent auction.

Madeline played “Miss Caruso” in the film. In a freewheeling and completely engaging way Madeline also talked about her long and varied career in film and TV.

It was truly an honour and a privilege to be able to hear her talk about her experiences. She even stayed for our usual film club screening of Howard Hawks’s classic screwball comedy His Girl Friday. A memorable evening all round.

P.S. we sold the poster within 24 hours of it going at display at our gallery/shop and the funds are already with The Princess Alice Hospice…

We recently acquired this striking original and linen-backed (not by us on this occasion but beautifully done!) German one-sheet for Ernst Lubitsch’s lovely 1940 comedy Ninotchka. Original Greta Garbo posters from her Hollywood heyday are rare and expensive so this poster, with great art and design by Dorothea Fischer-Nobis ch is a good alternative. Billy Wilder co-wrote the screenplay and it’s generally accepted that this is the last great Garbo performance!
