Mark Jenkin’s remarkable film Bait was the most formally inventive and original release of 2019. Stunningly shot on a vintage 16mm camera using monochrome Kodak stock, the timely and relevant story concerns a Cornish fishing village overwhelmed by tourists, Airbnb types and out-of-towners, who threaten the very existence and trade of local fishermen and villagers. Never as didactic as that sounds, Bait is often very funny and captures (whether intentional or not) a lot of the tensions and issues that affected us all in 2019!
