A young French woman returns to the vast silence of West Africa to contemplate her childhood days in a colonial outpost in Cameroon. Claire Denis' astonishingly assured debut featured elements of her own colonial childhood memories. Visually ravishing and with a number of supporting performers who would later become much better known (François Cluzet, Isaach De Bankolé) Chocolat already contains many of Denis' later concerns (racial and political tensions, the place of women in male-dominated environments). This striking original British quad poster from the film's UK release in 1988 is now quite hard to find.
